Ian Town is a physician by training and a passionate educator at heart. He worked at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch from 1990 onwards, becoming Dean in 2002. Throughout his time at Otago he was engaged in innovation within the medical curriculum and as a researcher, he was a mentor to his colleagues and trainees.
In 2005 he was appointed as Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Canterbury, a position he held until 2013. In that role he a full oversight of academic curriculum development and quality assurance. He was involved in the decision to become a partner with Navitas to establish the UC International College.
Governance roles have included Chairing the 2018 review of the work of the Committee for University Academic Programmes (CUAP) and he has been Chair of the Tertiary Education Commission’s Performance Based Research Fund 2018 quality evaluation round. He is an experienced Director and a Chartered Member of the Institute of Directors.
